  38.      The telescope's mirror was moved last night but it was commanded back
  39. to the position it was in before the previous tilt and decentering.  Wide
  40. Field Planetary Camera (WFPC) images taken after the move appear to confirm
  41. that the secondary mirror is back where it was 5 days ago.  This decision was
  42. reached after extended discussions over the state of the current focus and
  43. how next to proceed.  One of the primary reasons to move the mirror back to
  44. the previous position was that it has become apparent that since the tilt
  45. and decentering movement the Fine Guidance Sensors (FGS's) have had trouble
  46. holding fine lock, even on stars that they had held in fine lock before.
  47. Without the ability to go into fine lock the necessary wavefront sensor (WFS)
  48. data cannot be obtained.  So, it was decided to go back to the previous
  49. position and gather more WFS data.
  50.  
  51.      The Astronomy team (AST) reported that they found the phantom star that
  52. failed the guide star acquisition for the first WFPC 10-image test.  The
  53. Faint Object Camera (FOC), the Faint Object Spectrograph (FOS), the Goddard
  54. High Resolution Spectrograph (GHRS) and the High Speed Photometer (HSP) are
  55. all on hold.

  57.      The WFPC is in full operate mode.  The attempt to get 10 images through
  58. 3 filters went very well as did the two Bootstrap support images.  The next
  59. WFPC images are scheduled for June 21 at around 3 PM EDT.

  91.      The European Space Agency's Ulysses spacecraft, a scientific
  92. payload to be deployed by the Space Shuttle Discovery in early
  93. October, will be the focus of a briefing and photo opportunity at 
  94. the Kennedy Space Center, Fla., Tuesday, June 26, at 11 a.m. EDT.

  96.      Ulysses is a NASA/ESA international project designed to
  97. study the poles of the Sun and interstellar space above and below
  98. the poles.  Ulysses will be launched on a planetary trajectory to
  99. use the gravity of Jupiter to slingshot the spacecraft out of the 
  100. solar ecliptic plane and toward the south pole of the Sun.

  121. Satcom F2R, transponder 13 located at 72 degrees W. Longitude.

  123. be dialed directly at 407/867-1220, -1240, or -1260.  A two-way 
  124. question and answer capability also will be available at other 
  125. NASA news facilities.

  127.      At the conclusion of the briefing, news media will be taken
  128. by bus to NASA's Hangar AO spacecraft checkout facility on Cape
  129. Canaveral Air Force Station for a photo opportunity of Ulysses.
  130. The astronauts and project officials, who participated in the
  131. briefing, will be available for interviews.
  132.  
  133.      Clean room attire will be provided.  Photographers may use
  134. electronic flash and battery powered lights.  No outside power
  135. will be available.  No shorts or skirts are permitted and flat,
  136. close-toe shoes are required.  Camera accessories to be taken
  137. into the clean room must be transferred to special plastic bags
  138. which will be provided -- no leather or vinyl can be taken into 
  139. the facility.  Quality control personnel may request a wipe-down 
  140. of photographic support equipment such as tripods before entering
  141. the clean room area.  The cleaning materials will be furnished.
  142. No matches or lighters are allowed.

  144.      Arrival back at the KSC News Center is expected at about
  145. 2 p.m. EDT.
